ON THE BEACH

Sea turtles laying eggs unexpectedly on the beach

Break of dawn sun is rising as I walk towards each

As a child, I don’t yet understand

Thinking one thing as I stand in the warm sand

Wouldn’t they be fun to ride

Then watch as they leave with the tide

Light breeze caresses my face

As she holds me in her loving embrace

I didn’t recognize that look radiating from her eyes

Not until recently did I begin to realize

We are all bound together by one event

The love of a child and a parent

Now as a father do I grasp the look I saw that day

My own little miracles discovering wonders as they play

Daddy please tell my why, what is that I see

How and where? Up in the sky, why is a bee a bee?

Will I ever grow big and tall like you?

Look daddy, I am walking in your shoes

The possibilities for their world is endless at this age

I stand in awe, looking, and etch each moment on a page

I desire all their desires and hope to give them more

But hope my failures and my faults will stay behind closed doors

I give them all I have with encouragement and praise

Knowing in my heart there is a limit to these days
